I listened to this on tape (back when I had a tape player in my car!!!) and it was fabulous. His voice!!!! LOVED IT!!!

3.5 stars

The humorous writing style elevated my enjoyment of this memoir, despite the overall depressing nature of the story. To think that these kinds of things actually happened is just unbelievable.

What we have here is very complete, very well-written piece of narrative. I enjoyed McCourt's musings and his careful balance between the tragic and the comedic. I've heard that the people of Limerick were aghast at this retelling of a struggling family in the 30s and 40s, but even if there were some more fictional elements to this, I don't think it detracts from the work as a whole.

I don't know why I didn't love this memoir as much as everyone else seems to do. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it, maybe it's because I listened to the audiobook (read by the author himself), and sometimes I forget to listen because a word or sentence sends a lot of thoughts chasing around my head and I listen to them instead of the audiobook, and so I miss bits and pieces of the story. Maybe that's why it didn't have the same impact on me, but for me this was fine but not great.
