Percy Jackson has woken up with almost no memories other than he’s a demi-god and someone named Annabeth is important to him. He finds Juno (the Roman version of Hera) who leads him to Camp Jupiter, the Roman demi-god camp. With little time to get his bearings and learn any more information about his past, he’s quickly roped into a quest alongside Frank and Hazel, two relative outcasts harboring huge secrets, to free Thanatos, the god of Death or forever doom the camp.

Heck YES am I glad to be back with PJ and he’s somehow even funnier despite no longer being in 1st person. Uncle Rick was genius for frontloading this book with Percy POV’s because while I genuinely enjoyed the first HEROES OF OLYMPUS book, I was really missing our boy and getting so much of him right at the start was incredible. And it was so wonderful to get some other familiar faces back like Tyson and Nico, I was really missing them too.

I also adored our newbies! I was surprised how instantaneously I warmed to Hazel and Frank, but maybe it was how immediately they adopted my boy or how they’re both little outcasts in their own way, but I was quickly protective over them too. It follows the standard faire of getting a quest with the overarching fear of this 7 demi-god prophecy and how Gaia’s going to be a problem some day, but similar to last book I vastly prefer the construction of these books to the ‘monster of the chapter’ format of PJ. It still moves from task to task, but it feels more organically so with more stakes, fun mysteries, and great reveals as always. Some of the overall plot is a bit yadda yadda’d as usual, but I enjoyed the characters so much I don’t even care how much of it didn’t made sense, it didn’t lessen my enjoyment at all and I’m really enjoying this expanded universe and peaking into the other, Roman half. I did miss the newbies of last book, I won’t lie, so I’m very excited to see how everyone comes together next book and what fresh hell that’ll create. All in all I’m just having a really good time and am quite excited to continue on.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON

This was honestly just so much fun! I really didn’t realize how much I missed Percy until I was back with him, but yeah, I fucking love PJ, he’s the absolute best. This quest is a bit absurd, tbh if you think too hard about some of the plot points have me scratching my head like, but wait why though? Like wtf is the actual difference between the Roman and Greek versions of the gods, like what do they remember of their counterparts if anything? They’re clearly the same person, but Mars pretends to not be Ares for example, it’s legit so weird. So truly just don’t worry about it. Focus on the characters and that’s how I’ll break this down, because they’re why we’re all here.

Percy: The cliffhanger of last book that Percy had been swapped with Jason and similarly memory wiped was such an incredible hook for this book and I loved even more that he only remembers Annabeth, because duh, of course. What’s wild is I thought these events would be happening concurrently with the other book, but no apparently he was kidnapped for like 8 months! That shit is insane, so when he rightfully tries to punch Juno/Hera, yeah I get it. His lack of knowledge just had me constantly cracking up (the fact the blurb of this book is ‘Percy is confused’ killed me, truly when is that NOT true?!) like how he’d meet characters he’s defeated before and they’d be pissed and he was like, ‘I don’t even know who you are’ or when he saw Mars, the Roman version of Ares, he’s like, ‘mm we def fought and I def beat you’, so funny. Not only does Percy continue to be overpowered AF, but just the sweetest kid when he wants to be, so fully unsurprising how immediately obsessed with him his friends and Reyna are. I feel like multiple girls proposition him, to which he’s just awks and responds like, ‘pretty sure this Annabeth girl is my girlfriend, at least I think’ lol and Reyna even gives him the praetor position (basically one of their camp leaders), which was Jason’s, which is also so confusing because like, how is that gonna work since at some point he’ll obviously leave to go back to Camp Half-Blood, it’s wild, but it’s Percy, he just goes with it. Also when he falls off an ice shelf and his new friends are petrified for him and he’s all, nah, I’ve had worse, lolol I can’t with this kid. Also, utterly GENIUS idea to only show his abilities to talk to horses through the perspectives of the other two, especially with Hazel’s sassy horse, so Percy is like ‘omfg wash your mouth out’ to this horse, that shit was incredible, I love this stupid kid, omg it was so funny. As per usual Percy just remains a good leader and allows the others to shine around him as well, he always bigs up the other two, especially Frank who needs the encouragement. My particular fav is how jelly he is of Frank’s abilities, Percy you have like LITERALLY every other power, it’s all right you don’t do everything, this kid, I can’t. I also got quite misty when he was reunited with his angel brother, Tyson, and I LOVED the addition of Ella, a harpy they saved who quotes weird books and also has some prophetic knowledge. Also Ella has a huge crush on Tyson, and that’s the cutest damn shit I’ve ever seen, I love it. So glad we’re back, can’t wait for him to be reunited with his girl.

Hazel: Hazel’s backstory is equally weird as it is cool. Apparently she lived back in the 40’s and her mother was so greedy she made a wish with Pluto (Hades, also Hazel’s god dad) to be insanely wealthy, but apparently that comes with a price. When Hazel was born she was gifted with the ability to find precious gems and metals easily, but any buyers would suffer. So basically her mom sucks and got reeled in with Gaea causing her to sacrifice herself to raise up a cyclops (the one they later defeat in this book) and Hazel went to the underworld to plead for her mom not to be eternally tormented or something which I think she offered herself in her place, idk. Cut to, current day with the god of death captured, people who were dead are just coming back like it’s no issue and Nico finds Hazel, recognizing her as another child of Pluto like him, and brought her out of the underworld. So yeah, it’s weird, and she keeps referring to Nico as her bro which I guess he is, like Tyson and Percy are, and I’m very glad to have Nico back, but he’s aloof and sketchy as per usual. I laughed my ass off when Hazel introduced him to Percy and Nico was like, yup, we’ve never met bye LOL! He ends this book missing, so unsure where it’s going, but glad to have him back. Hazel has these crazy dreams that keep knocking her out into flashbacks, I guess because Nico wasn’t supposed to have brought her back from the dead, it’s another weird moment that doesn’t super make sense and how her backstory is slow dripped to us. Part of her curse was Pluto claimed a son of Neptune would save her from it, or something, and we all assume that’s Percy because obviously, who else, but we find out Frank is another relative of Neptune/Poseidon despite being also a son of Mars, on his mom’s side. He ends up going into one of these dream/flashbacks with Hazel and learns her history and he informs her of his prophecy with his weird stick that apparently holds his life. He trusts her with that as she trusts him with her truth and they wake up with no more issues. It’s weird, as is everything with her, but Frank and Hazel are cute AF and I really like them together, so I'm cool with it. They’re so sweet, I enjoy their small moments of recognizing they find the other attractive but not quite knowing what to do about it. She also gains this BA horse from the amazons (the fact their headquarters is a literal amazon factory killed me, that shit was hilarious) that apparently none of them could ride or tame, but she’s able to, so that’s cool as heck and he’s the bad mouthed one that Percy’s like whoooa. And she provides our crazy cliffhanger of seeing Leo and losing her shit because she recognizes him as Sammy, someone she knew back in the day when she first lived, which we all are like, how the fuck is that? But truly stranger things have happened so I guess we’ll see! That was a really cool reveal I def didn’t see coming and a cool tie between our two demi god groups.

Frank: Then Frank, my sweet little Asian himbo. For some reason Frank has been looked out as a bit of a bad luck charm, outcast at camp, something about an ancestor being bad news (I think the one we find out later is a child of Neptune) and people are just needlessly mean to him, aside from Hazel which is exactly why he has a giant crush on her. Then he only recently gets claimed by his god daddy, Mars in this case which is so funny for such a gentle person like Frank, but he’s who sets them on this quest to free Thanatos and save their camp from being attacked and destroyed, especially if no one dies they have no chance. Frank really goes through it, we learn about this other weird curse where apparently his entire soul is tied to some piece of wood and if it burns out he’ll die, apparently because he’s too powerful or something, it’s another ‘but why?’ moment and isn’t really solved. Even worse his stick is basically a nub by the end of this book, so not great. He has a sweet moment with Hazel where they connect over their mutual trauma, but Frank also loses his grandmother when they’re attacked and trying to find shelter at her place and he finds out he can also shape shift, which is cool as hell, but I guess explains why he’s so powerful, boy really goes through it in terms of finding himself in just a few days, it’s insane. But I think he really finds his place in this book and shows how incredible he is by the end, I also appreciate his baby, burgeoning relationship with Hazel by the end, they’re cute. I do fear what her recognition of Leo means for them, similar I guess to what Reyna means for Jason and Piper, but I guess we’ll just have to see. Frank is just lovely, so sweet, and I appreciate how much the other two recognize and love him by the end, I just adored this trio and they were such a fun offset for our PJ.

So yeah, I just had such a good time! It’s wild and ridiculous, truly as always, but I had a really good time and really loved these three. I’m so excited to see how these groups merge and intermingle. Here’s hoping Jason gains a bit of a personality and my ships remain unscathed, but we’ll see. The fact this is only book 3 in a 5 book (I believe) series though? Truly it’s anyone’s guess where we’re going.

Glad  to see percy again! I honestly adore percys pov the most because he always cracks me up, the sarcasm is 10/10

i think frank's history got super confusing at one point so il have to revisit it later at some point. I'm assuming that he has neptune blood and that equals shapeshifting because water shifts??? Otherwise I'm not entirely sure how things got there

Uhm.. I'm a little disappointed, I thought this was going to be like the first book. I was trying to find that rush that I had previously felt but it just felt like a regular 4 star book. We do get more information but Percy just seemed like everything was given to him unlike Jason. I do like the comparison of the Roman and Greek differences of the gods and camps. Just maybe next time we can keep the tension...

These books just keep getting better. I think Riordan learns from his past books and keeps writing better stories and livelier characters. The story this time had no wasted space and fit together perfectly with the previous book, while leaving enough going on for a continued series. Percy’s series could probably be a trilogy and become sharpened by the cut, while this series feels like it should be a full five books.

the more i read into this series, the more i appreciate having read the percy jackson series for context, otherwise i wouldn’t understand why percy or even jason react a certain way to certain things and it just made it that much more immersive. very good book, can’t wait to finish the rest of the series.

Again I devoured this book. It was worth the late night for sure.

this would have been 1 star but nico carried the book even if he was only there for like 3 paragraphs. this is coming from someone who would get rick riordan's face tattooed on my back, which is saying a lot about this book.
i've never been so BORED during a pjo book?? i'm so disappointed honestly. like i really couldn't care less about hazel or frank..
