While the message is good, this book just has no real depth. I feel like I’ve read this exact story a million times, and I just couldn’t find it in myself to care.
I loved Marin and I hated Bex! That’s the whole story. I mean, I’m still pissed about the ending, I think he deserved to suffer a little bit more, but, I get that, that’s not how real life works and, all that Jazz.
I received this as an eARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Marin is a star student with plans to go to a prestigious college. It is senior year and as the editor of the paper, she has big plans. Marin knows that things will be the best. She has class and newspaper with her favorite teacher Bex, a young hot teacher. However, when Bex does something completely out of line and Marin reports it. She finds that no one believes her and he begins to use his power against her. Marin is even left behind by her best friend. As a way to cope, Marin begins using her editorials to take a stand against the culture of her school and starts a feminist book club. These changes that she makes begin to open her world and give her power.
This book moved quickly and was well done. I enjoyed the characters. I also felt that this was a quieter book, which made it extremely believable. Marin doesn't set the world on fire, she takes believable realistic steps and really gives readers a road map to working through any similar challenge they may encounter.
