Such an impressive debut novel from Emily Tesh, and so different from her novellas! Although it starts off feeling a bit YA, the tone matures as our protagonist loses her naivety, and Tesh skillfully conveys that there is more going on than we are seeing. This book lends gravity to complex topics and recons with heavy themes while still being an engaging and enjoyable read. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who (think weird time and space stuff, strong character growth, and an important lesson), you’ll like this book! Also a great starter for people new to sci fi or space operas in general. Loved it!!!

This kept me hooked from the beginning, because Kyr was such an interesting perspective character. I liked the world building, and the twists of the story that I didn't anticipate, but I think Kyr is what kept me hooked. This reminded me of Seven Devils/Seven Mercies and The Disasters by M.K. England. It isn't YA, but I think it would work well for the right teen since so many of the characters are teenagers navigating growing up (just on a space station with extremely outsized problems)-the opening includes explicit content warnings. It's definitely a story that's lingering with me after I finished.

This book was fantastic. I can't even say too much about why I loved it, because most of the things that were so great are massive spoilers! I'll settle for saying that it takes several familiar sci-fi tropes — some of which you'll spot immediately, and others which take some time to reveal themselves — and remixes them into something that felt both fresh and timely.
The most impressive non-spoilery thing the book accomplished was managing to keep the reader just slightly more clued-in than the main character is. It's tricky to keep that balance with the reveals, between the reader knowing everything too early and the main character essentially narrating every logical step. I also enjoyed the setting, particularly the aliens and their sufficiently-advanced-technology, and the way the characters were developed as the plot went on.
I will warn you that you're not going to like the main character. She's a real piece of work when we first meet her. I promise, she gets better. Much better. Ordinarily such massive transformations over the course of one book ring hollow, but due to the spoilers I actually believed it this time. I also want to say that, if you're anything like me, you're probably going to be wondering around the 15-20% mark if you can trust the author with what this book seems to be taking on. The answer is yes. Again avoiding spoilers, but the things that are making you raise your eyebrows are intentional and serve the plot.
My biggest point of contention with the book was with the ending. It was foreshadowed pretty early on, so it wasn't deus ex machina. It's fair enough, I guess. It just felt a little too convenient for my tastes. Like, the bow shouldn't have tied up so neatly, if that makes sense? But I'm not really mad at it.
Does the tiger die?There is, in one scene, a tiger. I'm not kidding. The tiger is presented from its introduction as an adversary, and is killed(in a somewhat graphic manner) in the course of a character defending themself.

What a book! I was drawn to it before I even heard what it was about, given that Emily Tesh wrote some of my favourite novellas, Silver in the Wood & Drowned Country. This sci-fi novel surprised and delighted me in how different it was from those, confirming Tesh’s qualities as a writer.
The first few chapters were a challenge, getting to know Kyr and her strong but flawed character, and the universe in which Terrans lost the war. Then, through the intricacies of plot and world-building, the characters started to shine and take centre-stage, bringing with them many questions around the notion of legitimacy and power. Kyr has a fantastic character arc, and I loved witnessing her growth as a character, from a devoted teenager so sure of her hierarchy’s benevolence to a questioning young woman having to sort through what’s true and what she’s been told all her life.
There were some plot twists I did not see coming, and I loved how they blended exterior conflicts with character writing. Tesh pictures a world that is still riddled with sexism and racism, but she shows the origins and how the characters decide to deal with the situation in a very satisfying way all along a fast-paced narrative that kept me turning the pages.

Who gets to decide what the greater good is? And what happens when we disagree over what that means?
Some Desperate Glory is a beautiful, unexpected story about what it means to be human in this universe. Following violence and love through interweaving threads of space and time, Some Desperate Glory asks the question “what’s worth fighting for” through the eyes of a 17 year old child soldier in a militant space colony set to avenge a murdered Earth. The world created in this novel is brutal, and the characters are, at times, shockingly cruel, though their capacity for gentleness and reflection often reveals itself at surprising moments. While reading this book, I laughed out loud in surprise, joy, and painful recognition. Tesh identifies her work as “social science fiction,” and I couldn’t agree more.
