Loved the magic! The red fox was my favorite part. I also love the lessons of compassion and intention in the magic. I also loved how action-packed the ending was.
What would have bothered me as a kid (and therefore does as an adult) is the sesame-street-ification of all dialogue with adults. Adults in this story are perfect, flawless teachers of lessons. Every conversation with grown ups comes with a serving of "loving your brother" or "having pride in yourself" or "not running from anything" and those are good messages, but I wanted some normal conversation.
So glad this book exists! Loved learning about root work.

This book was everything in a book I could’ve asked for. I truly enjoyed it.

Very slow and kind of dull throughout, but I did enjoy the insight into Gullah-Geechee culture, rootwork, and African-American folklore. Might have enjoyed this more if I was in the target age group.
