What a good way to get out of a reading slump! I read this entire book while on a flight to Chicago so I feel a little more accomplished than I would had I finished it on any other old day. It’s not a sad book but even the slightest mention of loss had me holding back tears in my seat. I miss Katarina and goddamnit I don’t think I’ll ever forget the feeling of losing her.  I know this review is lazy but I’m in a rush exiting the terminal.

Oh my god. Wow. Wow wow wow! I regret not reading this book sooner. It is so. Stinking. Good. I like to think I’m pretty good at predicting endings, but this one through me for a loop! I had nooooo idea what was going to happen throughout the entire book. Twists, mysteries, and suspense kept  me turning up until literally the very last page. I’m obsessed. I’m starting book two immediately. Good bye, sleep!

This is definitely overhyped on social media, especially TikTok. This gave me strong Knives out vibes, but luckily it had its own take on it. I struggled to get into this book. Normally with a mystery book I am hooked straight away but this just didn't; I would say that it was probably down to the pacing as I found it to be fairly slow throughout. I think the issue was there was no urgency to the plot which is what normally spurs a Mystery/Thriller forwards. There were also parts which were very predictable especially the ending. On the other hand I did like the characters especially Avery, and the atmosphere of the book was well set.
I'm definitely going to continue with the series as I want to see where it goes next.

“sometimes things that appear very different on the surface are actually exactly the same at their core.”

what i liked the most about this book were the short chapters. honestly, if this book had long chapters, i wouldn’t have been engaged, because i hated the first, i’d say, quarter, two quarters of this book? every character annoyed me, no more than the main character—she was insufferable. there were too many introduced all at once that i basically forgot who was who and it was a big “wait who’s this?” everytime someone other than the main character(s) spoke or were mentioned. however, the mystery was interesting enough to get me hooked, albeit a little lacklustre and anticlimactic at the end. although it ended on a cliffhanger, it wasn’t really enough to keep me interested, so i don’t think i’ll be reading the next book
