Some sweet and magical elements and a cast of interesting other characters. Just the main one was a bit whiny in the style of Harry - never seems to learn from events and can always see the misery that might happen, without seeing all the wonder that IS happening??? Loved Fen.

Jessica Townsend’s debut novel is an imaginative first entry in what promises to be a hit series.
Read as part of the Rising Stars English scheme for Year 5 level, this novel proved to be a bumpy start but a worthwhile challenge. The language used throughout was in my opinion rather advanced for this age group and would be better pitched at Year 6 or even Year 7 level.
There were multiple parallels between this novel and that of the Hunger Games and Harry Potter series, almost to the point of plagiarising. Nevertheless, the gripping story and character of Morrigan Crow hooked my little class of readers and left them yearning for more.

Fun, simple, found family story. I enjoyed reading this before I went to bed. This story did have some dark parts, but was cheerful and calming for the most part.
