This is a little gem of a book. It reads quickly, but it brought a sense of calm to me. Its descriptions of a summer on the steppes, were farmers provide the grain that will be the bread their male relatives at war will eat, is very atmospheric. The narrator is the brother in law of Jamilia and we see a new relationship take place through his eyes. He is a painter at heart and his discriptions are quite vivid.
