Well, not quite the most beautiful love story in the world, but still definitely worth a read. I'd give it a 3.5 if I had the option. If this is a book of love, it is the love one feels for one's homeland. In that sense, it reminded me a bit of Mehmed, My Hawk which I am also currently reading...

WW2-era Kyrgyzstan is a pretty interesting place. With all the healthy men at the front, the farm work is done by the wives and the younger brothers. The story is told from a younger brother's perspective of a trip taken with his sister-in-law. The landscape is the true protagonist; rural Kyrgyzstan is a beauty to behold.

It's a short story, and it can be found online, for free, pretty easily. I read it in a there-back ride on the metro. You should, too.

Ganz okay - eine kurze Liebesgeschichte. Ich glaube, ich habe mich nicht in das Buch verliebt, weil ich keinerlei persönlichen Bezug zum Buch hatte.

Simple, yet I found this really affecting. There's scuh a sensory aspect to the descriptions, they were so vivid and lyrical. A story about love, rather than a romance, but love in many forms - including love of and connection to one's land and history. Truly, one Daniyar started singing I fell for this short little book!
