This was excellently written. It contains a lot of academic info, but narratives and storytelling is so interwoven into the writing that it feels easy to digest. Very useful perspectives and information! And such an excellent incorporation of intersectionality. I really feel that I benefited from reading this and gained a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the challenges of racism. Also, this book gives some of the best advice for white people that I've seen in a book.
This book challenged my thinking, and quite honestly made me uncomfortable at times. But here's the thing- it's not about me feeling comfortable! It's about reality, facts, and the truth. This book is so important. I highly recommend it!
I really enjoyed this book. I would be interested in hearing what someone who is not as familiar with the subject would think of it. I personally think the author was great.
This was an excellent text. It really did open my eyes to something things...Obama, Trump, news. And it really is about helping the reader be less stupid about race - less unaware of the idea that where there is power in this country, there is racism. Fleming is, of course, an excellent writer and I really loved the mix of informal and formal writing.

I really appreciated the frankness of this book. I was challenged and uncomfortable reading it, and am thankful for that. It's given me lots to think about and further research.
I've been striving to better educate myself on race, and I really appreciated Fleming's views and information. It was a great read (or listen in my case), and it was very insightful.
My only issue was the terminology that was thrown around... I am still learning, and I kept finding myself having to rewind and reread/listen to fully grasp what I was hearing. The title lead me to believe it would be broken down a bit simpler, but I found there is a lot of scholarly language that didn't always digest for me the first time through. A very minor issue at the end of the day!

This book was POWERFUL.
I’m buying it and I’ll need to reread it to fully unpack but she kept it all the way real.
These are just a FEW of the nuggets in this book:
“Racism-awareness requires us to be sensitive to the continuing effects of racism in our society.”
“White supremacy persists, to a great degree, because of white folks’ refusal to aggressively challenge other whites on their racism.”
“It does not take a genius to know Obama was aware of racism and white supremacy but actively chose access and power anyway.”
“Obama knew quite well that racism is endemic and systematic in the US. He also knew white people would never vote for him if he said such a thing.”
“Ours is a society that has always socialized white folks to live in the midst of racial oppression but go on with their lives like normal.”
She also ends with concrete recommendations of steps individuals can take.
This was tough to read. It’s not easy to face the ways my thoughts and actions have contributed to white supremacy.
Great, necessary read.
