Such an important book. I’m currently a student studying sociology, so I was familiar with much of the terminology that Fleming uses, but she breaks the concepts down *so well* - perhaps more clearly and concisely than I’ve ever heard any sociologist do - and makes this book truly accessible for the masses. This is not “academic jargon;” it is a practical, eye-opening, no BS kind of book. As Fleming puts it, she’s “not gonna hold your hand.” I’m grateful for Fleming’s work, especially the many ideas for action she suggests at the end of the book. After all, this is, as Fleming states, a “lifelong work.”
Extremely good, accessible, engaging, & containing clear action steps. Also a quick read with moments of humor, strongly recommend.
This book is the type of energy I want to bring to my anti racism work. As a white woman she challenged me to challenge racist friends, family, co workers and make people uncomfortable, because Black women are sick of calling people out.
This hard-hitting exposé on race in the U.S. opened my eyes even more to the deep-rooted racial issues in the world and the systemic nature of racism. Fleming is intelligent, witty, brutally honest, educated, genuine, and meaningful in her analysis of race in America. I learned quite a lot reading this and it helped me scrutinize how race and privilege play a role in my own life. I recommend this for anyone who is serious about learning more about and tackling issues of racism in our society.

Another really helpful and down-to-earth explanation of racism, white supremacy, and why we all need to educate ourselves more on these sensitive but critical topics.
