This was a good page turner. It was just a tad darker than I was hoping for, compared to the first two books in the series.

Joe and his family are put through the wringer in this one, and so is the reader. I skimmed a lot, out of dread about what was going to happen next. It's a somewhat grim read overall, and in this installment I started to get the distinct feeling that the author is a conservative. He makes his villains so evil, there's no nuance. And Joe is a stalwart, ethical person forced to cross the line due to the evil he encounters. Evil in the form of the federal government...

A Wyoming game Warden has his foster daughter reclaimed by her mother who has taken up with some antigovernment people who have set up camp on Forest Service land. While on patrol he comes across some dead elk and arrests the man who shot them. The man then escapes and while Joe is chasing him he is murdered. Another federal employee us also targeted and it is thought that the antigovernment people are responsible. Joe doesn't think so and sets out to prove it.
Meanwhile a local is arrested for the crimes but a Forest Service supervisor and an FBI agent are determined to do something about those illegal campers. The weather is really bad and Joe's emotions are getting the best of him. When it is all over Joe is frustrated with the outcome and the real bad guys aren't being held responsible.
The author is good about describing the weather conditions so well you feel like you are there. Includes lots of different issues such as how the legal system deals with foster families, government bureaucracy, antigovernment feelings and small towns.

I absolutely love this mystery series by Box. Joe Pickett continues to develop as a character and I love his compassion, love for family, work ethic and human frailties. It's nice to have crimes solved by someone who doesn't always do the right things in the smartest way. Box makes the good guys good and the bad guys really nasty. He's also created a few characters who are in-between. Great fun.
