Goddamn it, C.J. Making me throw the book at my television last night. Breaking my heart.

I'll give him this. Box doesn't pull his punches. Life sucks sometimes. Just once, I'd like Joe to get a clean win.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this series. The plots are well plotted, complex, and satisfy a mystery lover. I am noticing, though, that Box’s female characters are very stereotyped. Joe Pickett’s wife is solid, strong, and has very traditional roles and behaviors. I’m tired of the mother-in-law vilification and the remaining female characters - especially those in “villain” roles are annoyingly portrayed as insipid, shrill, bitchy, or as some other negative trope. The male characters seem more fully developed. It feels like the books were authored more in the 70’s or 80’s than the early 2000’s.

I’m still up for reading more of the series though, especially as I’m now traveling in Joe Picket’s back yard.

Likable characters and realistic family dynamics mix with a believable, well-paced plot to make this an entertaining read. The Joe Pickett at the end of this book is not the Joe Pickett of the first two books. I'm curious to see how the character continues to change as the series progresses.

Continues as a strong series with well-liked characters. "Winterkill", lots of downs... was there ever an up moment?

State and Fed officials were out to start another "Waco" against Sovereign citizens moving through small-town Wyoming. The situation was hellish with 3 feet of snow as Joe tried to solve crime in the area. Things went from bad to worse. Huge change. A new falconer character is introduced. Thank you CJ Box for giving Joe a kick-ass sidekick.
