The wraith series felt very pre-2000s marvel comics in both it's writing and it's artwork, but everything else was really entertaining.

Annihilation Conquest surpasses its originator. Assimilation would have been a better title for the event. Excited to move on to more Nova and Abnett's Guardians.

A new threat to the Marvel universe is created with the technological Phalanx collective. The protectors will assemble to neutralize the threat in what is a very predictable superhero story that feints deeper emotion but is ultimately a teenage hero story. Not bad not good.

Introducing Wraith, a dark new space hero who is based on the "Man With No Name" concept. Beautiful art by Kyle Hotz, although the character's strong introduction unfortunately drifts off into a forgettable tale, and rumors that he might actually be a new version of ROM, Spaceknight were much more interesting than the origin we actually got.
That said, the Wraith miniseries is really just an appetizer for the rest of the book, which contains the whole Annihilation: Conquest miniseries. Like the Annihilation story, this features a bunch of heroes ganging up against a seemingly unbeatable foe, but Abnett & Lanning are stronger writers than Keith Giffen, and both the character and story beats of Conquest are stronger than Annihilation itself. In addition, Tom Raney's artwork is pretty strong. And while I won't give it away, the choice of villain behind the Phalanx was a great one, elevating a solid Avengers villain to the level of galactic threat very effectively.

I'm guessing this ties in pretty heavily with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The tide starts to turn in volume 2 as the characters we've previously seen come together. While it never reaches the heights of Annihilation, conquest is another huge, fun but character-driven event from Abnett and Lanning.

Much better ending than the original Annihilation arc. And the art never got painful. It did get less accessible, however. The stories used a lot of C-list heroes, but set them up well. I couldn't tell which ones pre-existed and which were created from scratch. No continuity issues. But once they started pulling out the villain reveals, they used much bigger names and assumed you already knew all about them. And having to stop reading to check Wikipedia or such is a major pain that takes you out of the story.

This is a satisfying conclusion to an entertaining collection of comics set in the Marvel cosmic universe. I can't say this is the most intelligent or literary arc I've read but I also can't say I didn't enjoy it either.
