Skip Wiley a columnist for the Miami Sun has gone off the deep end in many ways. He is El Fuego and the “leader” of Las Noches de Diciembre revolution.
His compatriots are Tommy Tigertail a Seminole Indian and owner of bingo parlors throughout Florida, Viceroy Wilson #31, former running back for the Miami Dolphins and Jesus Bernal an Ivy League graduate from New Jersey trying to free Cuba from Castro. Brian Keyes a former reporter and colleague of Skip turned private detective solves the mystery that centers around the Orange Bowl pageant, parade and game.

I just "discovered" Hiaasen last year and am trying to read all his works. This is one of his first novels and I can see his talent, although I don't think it's his best effort. He is fun to read and I'll keep reading his works.

Good humour (definitely written for its time lol) and a strangley fun story (terrorist organisation intent on scaring away tourists from Florida). Interesting characters - Skip Wiley's insanity combined with his (actually quite credible) foundations/reasonings for his rage was a fun read. I also just liked him being a crazy newspaper columnist.

I think I would have found it even more funny if I knew more about Florida. Also I found that although I enjoyed it a lot l, I was able to put it down and stop reading quite a few times (apart from the end) which makes me feel like I definitely can't rate it a 5. Probably 4 - 3.5.

So interesting to see the origins of his comedy fiction writing - still finding its feet (the humor, observatio and absurdit  not nearly as developed as his later stuff) but very entertaining.

As a thriller and as satire it's as savage as ever. Pity about the squicky romance.

I didn't realize this was his first book when I started reading. Part of the issue I have with this one is the fact that it's extremely dated, and it hasn't aged particularly well. But also I think Hiassen has improved quite a lot over the years. I'd recommend this one only if you just have to be a completionist and read all of his works. Otherwise it's entirely skippable.

Not bad. But he gets better with later books.
