The time has come, first 1 star review of the year.

When I was in 6th grade I wanted to be a writer and I wrote this horrible book about four kingdoms and a failed prince that would develop to become a leader and a future king but would leave his position bcs his wife would be a better monarch so instead of the royal family continuing in the power this girl Dalia (who was not the mc) would be the Queen. If you ask me, I still see potential in it and if I ever decide to go back to it it would be good, but this book looks like my 6th grade book and it sucks.

It has no potential, my 6th grader self could have made a better plot. I skipped like 50% of the book and gosh it was terrible. Also the sister dying? Shut up, shut uppp. The mc was so annoying, the LI was so annoying.

HENRY WAS THE ONE BITCH.

Anyways don't read it bye.

Overall it was just kind of boring and unsatisfying. It certainly makes more sense if you've seen the movie but even then not much. I won't read it ever again and probably wont think of it again either

What intrigued me: I enjoyed the movie

I thought I knew what I was getting into when I picked this one up, but since the movie wasn't actually based on this book, it seems I was mistaken. I was irritated with this book from about page 3.

There is way way too much description in this book. Unnecessarily long flowery descriptions of almost everything; an entire paragraph is spent describing the grandmother's grace and skinny ankles. I'm not sure if I just became immune to this, but this weirdly drops off later in the book.

It seems like everything is inconsistent. Valerie's "friends" switch from not really liking her, to acting like her best friends, to actively despising her
Spoilerlike sacrificing her to get what they want, and telling her how she deserves to die
, and then yet again switching back to being her friend. The father changes between being a drunken mess and being Valerie's ideal father, and both she and the love interests constantly fluctuate between burning love and burning hatred for each other.

On the topic of the love interests, they're awful. They're soulless flat characters, one of whom she hasn't even seen in 10 years but she's immediately head over heels for him again.

This book also failed to escape the "she's not like the other girls" trope. It is almost constantly being mentioned how Valerie is different than the other girls and from her sister: she climbs trees, she isn't interested in boys, she's not nice. Even when she's finally fitting in with the other girls there's the line "these were girls who knew how to do things other girls didn't". Eventually when the book stops comparing her to all the other girls, the entire plot revolves around her being different from anyone else.

Finally, the ending . The ending lost the book an entire star for me. There's no conclusion at all, not even a "hey let's be together while we continue trying to solve this Wolf problem". The book just ends before any answers are given. I can't remember an ending that's irritated me more.

The one thing I did like was that Claude got to narrate a little bit, so that the reader can see that he's just a little slower and has more trouble speaking than others but that he's not stupid or evil.

Would I recommend this?
I probably would only recommend this for younger or more romantic readers. I personally found the romance lackluster, and the characters inconsistent and boring without even a redeeming story.

This book was bad. Not claw my eyes out for something else to do kind of bad but still...it was bad and laughably so.

I'll be honest I couldn't finish it. I got over half way through and realized the only thing that was keeping me going was the overwhelming amount of hilarious similes (seriously? Her love is like a smooth, polished egg? Wow.) And then I found out about the non-ending and all interest in finishing evaporated.

The frustrating thing is there is potential for a good book here, it just never comes to fruition. There is a nice fairytale feel throughout the book and some of the imagery is really lovely but the characters were so poorly developed that I didn't care. At points only the physical descriptions of the characters kept me from getting them confused. The insta-love was poorly, poorly done between Peter and Valerie. I was actually kind of rooting for the other guy when I mustered the energy to care at all.

Overall, a poor attempt at publicising what I hope is a far better movie.

It was a bit boring at the start and it really bugged me how easily she fell in love with this horrible snooty dude. It was false love based on looks alone. She doesn't even consider Henry! And Peter's personality really got on my nerves. However, it did get better and more fast-paced as we neared the end.
SpoilerBUT WE NEVER FOUND OUT WHO THE HELL WAS THE WOLF!!!!
Not too happy with this book. It also reads like this book was written because Catherine Hardwicke wanted someone to write a book based on the movie. To which I have to say: ???????????????

Great book, the ending the me a little wanting even after the bonus chapter. But overall I enjoyed it. RRH is a quick read and of course like most books, much better than its movie counterpart.
