I was not a fan of the art. I was interested in the story, but disappointed when Benjy really went full force into religion at the end. Still, worth a read.
I came across this by pure accident, looking for something else, and I'm glad I gave it a chance. It's a fascinating look at a piece of cultural history - of the gang situation in the South Bronx in the 70s and how the truce helped give birth to hop-hop.
I'm not a huge fan of the art, but the story is well told and insightful.

Benjy Melendez's story is terrific, but I think it could have been done a lot more justice. The storytelling in this felt rather disjointed and as if it could have been fleshed out a lot more. The artwork was too muddy and nondescript for my liking, dulling the overall feel. But I'm inspired to learn more about the whole dynamic of the early 70s and the Hoe Ave Peace Meeting, and thankfully, Voloj does provide some good references for that.

The amazing story of Benjy Melendez. Without his leadership in organizing the 1971 gang truce in the Bronx, hip-hop would have halted or taken a much longer journey.

why is nobody talking about this?
this graphic novel gave me many new insights into puerto rican life in new york and especially the bronxs & I would absolutely recommend reading this.
