SPOILERS!

This book left me feeling very conflicted. The couple starts of with this strong instant love, they are likable, they seem fun, romantic, spontaneous - instant love isn’t usually my thing, but they drew me in.

Then the traumatic event happens. And suddenly, that love has almost vanished. Just small moments of sexual interaction is all you get. No laughter. No romance.

The whole time I’m feeling sorry for Layla, feeling sorry that a girl who went through something so traumatic and her whole life has been in shambles is now dealing with a man who is insensitive to her struggles and talks about how he loves the idea of who she was before so much but things are too different now. Then he starts to emotionally cheat on her and fall in love with someone else. You see her body get used over and over despite the fact that she’s obviously exhausted and malnourished, so that he can spend time falling in love with the person using her body. That he keeps justifying over and over because he’s helping someone who’s lonely - which he wasn’t helping at all, they were just hanging out? And he doesn’t care that his girlfriend is lonely?

And I know, in the end we are supposed to be happy that this is how he has been acting the whole time because of what the truth really is, but it just feels grimey still. It doesn’t really feel romantic that they are reunited, because the road to get there was so gross. I get it the villain of this story maybe deserved some bad things to happen to her, but that’s not what is gross about it. What’s gross about it is how willing Leeds was to horrendously mistreat and abuse who he thought was his girlfriend. He might’ve expressed a bit of guilt, but he never seemed to have a hard time justifying it.

The book did keep my interest, I wanted to know what happened. The twist was okay. The book does bring out emotions in you so I’ll give it something for that, but I spent most the book angry at the main character so it didn’t feel like a fun read.

This was a very different reading but I still loved it. If you are trying to decide if you want to read it or not, just be open minded. I still enjoyed the plot and the twists.

Honestly,

This was the hardest CoHo book I’ve ever had to read.

Probably the only Hoover book I have not enjoyed. Not a big fan of ghosts and paranormal so it was a little much for me. 2.5 stars rounded to 3.
