How do you navigate the weight of life and all the patriarchal violence inflicted on you, without going... mad? Without detaching yourself from reality and wanting to turn into a tree, like Daphne did?

The first two parts enraged me so (not because the text was bad, the characters and situations just feel so real and it was obvious we weren't meant to sympathize with the men) while the third and last part almost brought me to tears.

While reading the first part I thought that yeong-hye didn't have a community, that even her family favored the men in her life. By the third part it's apparent that she had In-hye all along, and the struggle of the sister to keep that bond afloat pained me so much.

Books that receive prizes such as this one all have one thing in common for me: they leave me feeling relieved it is over. Mostly it is because the cerebral masturbation required to hang on till the very last line is taxing to the extreme. In this case, I felt like that for 2/3dhs of the book.
from the flower
onwards it picks up in pacing and I could stand reading it, though I did almost give up in the beginning.
I didn't find a Y of the characters particularly compelling, except for the developments in the last chapter that finally gave the older sister some substance. Reading this was like eating a never ending bowl of porridge. Sure, it's food. But at some point I just want to eat something else that I might enjoy.

I need time to fully digest what I just read, but I am already haunted by this book.

*Edit: I initially gave this 4.5 stars but have come back to give it 5 as I just can’t stop thinking about it*

i love books about women and also books that make me go what the hell those two women are real af i am both of them at once

can be interpreted a lot of different ways which i like. the easiest one is about animal consumption, there's also conceptualizing death, societal norms, oppression of women, humans taking from the environment
