Having read the entire collection I now see Doyle as a man who appreciated women as the better sex, capable of saving men from their own bad character. His work is the Brittish counter to Edgar Allen Poe, though not as gothic. Well done.
This took me three months to get through, but I loved every minute of it. My love of Sherlock Holmes was born from the BBC series, and it inspired me to go back and read all of the classic stories, and I do not regret it one minute. Worth every minute of your time.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes...I happened to finish Dan Simmons's The Fifth Heart recently, and was a little put out about how he treated Sherlock in some spots. Having now finished the complete stories and novels - okay, yeah. Lots of inconsistencies, many stories a long stone's throw from fair, repetitive plotlines, and those stupid stories that are Sherlock intro, Sherlock epilogue...and a mass of adventure from America that I couldn't care less about. Sherlock is a heartless bastard, all right, maybe not as catastrophically hopeless as a human being as in The Fifth Heart, but definitely not a nice guy. Lots of brilliance here, of course - but lots of stories that don't ring even remotely true.
I've been a Sherlock Holmes fan since I first encountered Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in an English literature class in college. We read only a few of the short stories but I immediately adored (and hated) Holmes' eccentric personality and nearly complete disregard for social conventions.
Over the years I have read and re-read most of the short stories but somehow I had missed the longer, more complete narratives so I was thrilled when EVERYTHING was included in this audio reading of the Sherlock Holmes stories!! Stephen Fry even wrote and read his own introductions to each section which included historical information about Doyle's writing career and how the public responded to his latest Holmes stories. Also included in the introductions was historical context for better understanding the events/organizations/people participating in the narratives. I found this to be extremely enlightening and certainly helped me to better understand the ins and outs of Holmes' investigations.
Listening to this collection was so much fun and a must-listen for all Sherlock Holmes fans! You won't be disappointed. Stephen Fry takes on the role/voice of each character and truly brings these classic mystery stories to life.

This is a review for Book 2 of the Sherlock Holmes Definitive Audio Collection. I enjoyed Stephen Fry's narration. I have never read any of the original Sherlock Holmes stories but have been reading a lot of YA and middle-grade books based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. I found them to be witty, quirky, and fun mysteries. Book 2 contained the following classic Sherlock Holmes stories:
-The Sign of Four Part 2 (which would explain why I was so confused in the beginning since I was reading Part 2 for a book club that I didn't attend. Oops.)
-A Scandal in Bohemia
-The Adventure of the Red-Headed League
-A Case of Identity
-The Boscombe Valley Mystery
-The Five Orange Pips
-The Man with the Twisted Lip
-The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
-The Adventure of the Speckled Band
-The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
-The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
-The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet

I'm reading the kindle edition of this book. I doubt there is anyone who hasn't heard of Mr. Holmes yet but it's not wrong to repeat - it's one of the greatest books ever.
There are a lot to love but here are the top three:
i) Hints - there are always enough hints to track the progress but never enough to reveal the suspense. Conan Doyle balances this really well. That's why Sherlock Holmes remains my all time favorite
ii) Cleverness - Seems like the author has a never ending pool of ideas. Story after story there is something or the other that makes you say wow.
iii) English - It's fascinating to see the choice of words and phrases of (not so) old English.
