Truly masterful piece of literature that overlays themes of original sin with the duality of man. Engaging, funny, vivid, and fast-paced the whole way! Both deeply complex and brutally straightforward—makes me want to write an essay!
I’d reread in a heart beat.

  • “…until the small hours of the morning became large.”
  • She had an evil face, smoothed by hypocrisy: but her manners were excellent.”
  • "I knew it" said Utterson. "He meant to murder you. You had a fine escape.” "I have had what is far more to the purpose" returned the doctor solemnly: "I have had a lesson-O God, Utterson, what a lesson I have had!"
  • “If ever I read Satan’s signature upon a face…”
  • “It was, at least, a ticklish decision that he had to make.”

The way the story is writing (in the form of a case) is very involving as you feel like an investigator reading the pages. In the end you get a glance into the mind of Jekyll, which I liked but it made me curious about Hyde's side. We never get to know how he felt.

Disturbing, to say the least! I roughly knew the Jekyll-Hyde story; so that was no big surprise. What shocked me were the “other tales of terror”. They were far more scarier and sinister, even. The Jekyll-Hyde story itself is quite short, but for some reason, the publishers have included two large chapters at the beginning AND at the end, dissecting the tale. That got pretty tiring, real soon. Overall, the book is a scary scary read.
