Delightful

There’s a lot of telling instead of showing, making for some odd pacing, and a disconnectedness from the characters. It just felt flat.

Ohhhh, this was something! Haunting and gentle at once - not unlike the sprawling Greenhollow it concerns itself with. I was touched in a way only very certain things will do to me. An meandering beginning (the only reason it is not 5 stars; though maybe also because I am selfish and wish it was longer) quickly gave way to a wistful, old-fashioned tale of love and loss and time. It was lovely beyond any more words than that, really.

PS,
is it problematic to want to kiss Fabian and Silver exactly equally? Oops.

At a brief 109 pgs, this reads like a fairy tale and/or short story. The folklore or mythological theme is unique and it is a pleasing story. Not sure what to compare it to. Must say the cover is brilliant and the title makes a lot of sense once you start reading.

A man (almost a giant?) has lived in the woods 400 yrs or so and listens to trees. He does not own the land though and the villagers are scared of his size. When a new young gay man acquires the estate, the two meet even though this is only possible through magic. The giant man has mystical friends who hide the house and protect the land, but he is curious about the new owner.

When a villager injures the giant man, he goes to stay with the landowner and discovers he is losing his power outside of the woods. But they are now friends; there are only hints that it might become more than that. Ultimately, there is a big bad powerful force that appears once each year and it is now that time. Mildly creepy at the end. Unique story.

Such a lovely and quick read! (I listened to the audiobook and would recommend, the narrator is really good and you can follow each character.) I thought the world building was good in the short length the book was as well as had fully fledged characters with their idiosyncrasies and distinct personalities. I liked the twists and turns as well as the backdrop of folklore, and of course, the Wood.
