Me starting the book : nahhh, I'm not in the mood for this kind of story
Also me : hooked .00003 seconds in
This book is so amazingly complex. The whole plot, world building, the characters.... wow. Nothing like I ever expected.
So damn glad I have the whole trilogy sitting on a shelf

Should have read reviews before getting through book #2 in the series. I’m not going to read the third one. Wildly interesting premise around a virus that throughout causes humans to eat each other and the infected to explode. It doesn’t end up being the true focus of the books from my perspective as the teenage love interests and triangles with little character development drive the decisions made.
A female main character being “different”, a love triangle with some making out, some action scenes with running and wounded characters. Pretty much anything you can think of in terms of classic YA dystopian characteristics…this book probably has it. The fact that it had all of these things but still manages to convey a unique and compelling story is what made me love jt. There were definitely some times I was screaming at Catarina’s stupidity but again….would it really be a YA dystopian book if I wasn’t? Can’t wait for the next book.
Genetic Coding, advanced Tech., deadly viruses, romances, and plot twists galore, all wrapped into this little gem of a Sci-fi book. What more could you ask for?
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because it was that good. It is not often that I find a book that makes me want it to never end but this book did. It was such a good book. It had depth beyond what a lot of Young Adult books attempt. The author clearly did her research into these subjects and it shows. My only regret is that it is an ARC and now I have to wait even longer for the sequel. Seriously though this book just earned a spot in my favorite books of all time category.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. I've had it on my shelf for years but was intimidated by the genre and the size of the book and so I'm glad the audio version was available to me. I was really wrapped up in the story from the beginning - can't believe I listened to 13 hours of book in 5 days!
Stretching it a little but I'm using this book on these prompts for the 2023 BYL reading challenge:
About a scientific breakthrough
About vaccines

The start of this was a bit slow while it set up and developed the world, but once the plot twists started kicking in this was fast paced and didn’t stop. So many times I put down this book to actively gasp out loud and stare for a minute. Cat at the start was a bit of a bland character, but the twists and turns really developed her a lot. The writing style was a BIT 2012, but I think that was a product of being a first person narration in a dystopian world, but the plot really made up for it.
Woah. This book ensnared me from the very beginning and NEVER LET ME GO - I still feel like I'm living in an apocalyptic universe, connected by an invisible gentech panel cable. Fast-paced and action-packed, this novel is science fiction at its best: smart, strategic, and scary.
