Language is very data oriented. Took me a long time to adjust as I am not a tech oriented person.
What happens when a plague is unleashed on the world? One company controls the world. A rebel group is fighting for humanity.
Interesting perspective.

Brilliant!! I was so surprised by this book. I had picked it up at a used book store on a whim because I had a gift card. Next thing I know, I finish it in two days. I just adored the world building in this!! Sometimes with YA dystopia I find that the world building is vague and leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but the world building in this book is so full and detailed. As a biochemistry major, I appreciated the detail in the descriptions of the biotechnology.
And the plot twists!! I could barely put the book down. It was unfortunate that I picked this up so close to the end of the semester, because I really should have been working on some papers. But every free moment, Iāve been glued to this book. Canāt wait to read the next one :)

This Mortal Coil is a brilliant book.
I am not one for Dystonia-type fiction/action books, but this book is the exception to the rule.
It does have an apocalyptic-setting, but it is so much more than that.
The characters are rich, intriguing, multi-dimensional, growing and maturing as the book progresses. The whole world Suvada has created is so complex, but so easy to understand, she is a master.
My favorite part of the whole novel is the ethics struggle you can see throughout the book, it is a constant underlying problem and it does push the reader to question their own morals to an extent.
About the Novel:
So as I have said before, the novel is set in a type of apocalyptic setting. A crazy virus spread rapidly throughout the counties and people split into two groups. Go underground and hide so you cannot get affected, or stay topside and risk getting a horrible virus that makes you explode...
Not only is is a fast-paced thriller, there is also the fact that people have these type of machines inside them where they can install apps. These apps can help you improve your vision (a silly example). The DNA and Biological explanations and aspects of this book is absolutely brilliant. It's not just another world Suvada created, its is an extremely complex and extensive world. But she is so talented that I never even once were confused or overwhelmed with the jargon or lingo or strange ideas she present in her book.
I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something new. It is a complete mind game from beginning to the end.
I do have ONE pet peeve (SPOILER)
The whole romance aspect in the book was really cute, I loved it. But then the book took a rapid turn and threw me such a curve ball. I do feel the whole romantic dynamic and pace was completely disrupted with Cat's new 'revelation' about her past. Suddenly their new and blooming relationship jumps into an old one with so much history. It feels like I was cheated out of an epic romance growing into something sweet. I feel totally cheated there. But anyway, Suvada did save the day by keeping the romance cute and letting Cat admit she is struggling between her 'old' self and 'new' self.

This was really enjoyable. After a reading slump, and a series of meh books, it felt really good to come across this dystopian YA read to finish my Goodreads challenge.
Fast paced, no nonsense and creative - I loved the world that was created by the author - gene hackers, nano tech embedded in every sphere of life, biological apocalypse. The writing style was lucid, succinct and thankfully, neither very wordy nor too descriptive for a novel that relied on us feeling the panic of the end of the world crisis. However, details were gelled in beautifully with the main story line of Catarina's self discovery, and that draws you in pretty much from the start.
Cat and Cole, were good leads, and I thank Emily Suvada for not making them bores, ridiculous or too dramatic.
My only complaint, I suppose, is I did not like the Jun Bei twist at the end - not exactly how I wanted the story to end. But hey! I tell myself you cannot have everything in life, and sometimes just a good story with good characters and a creative world building is more than enough.

This Mortal Coil tells the story of Catarina Agatta, the daughter of the worldās most eminent geneticist. In this not-too-distant future of the United States, much of humanity has been driven underground after the outbreak of a deadly virus that sees people descend into primitive madness. Catarina struggles to eke out an existence on the surface, evading both the afflicted and the corporation that controls the nation, Cartaxus. As to be expected - one day, all of that changes.
This was such a fun ride from start to finish! The author didnāt make you wade through 100 pages of boring world-building before anything happened; there was action and adventure from page one! Emily Suvada manages to flesh out her world while navigating a whirlwind of car chases, gun fights, and explosions.
This Mortal Coil is a super enjoyable mix of sci-fi and adventure, blending a zombie apocalypse with a unique brand of gene hacking that can only be described as, āthereās an app for thatā. Itās got enough action to appeal to action fans, itās got enough science to appeal to science fans, and itās got tech enough to appeal to mobile-addicted readers like myself. It's filled with enough twists and turns to appeal to the sleuths, and there's even a nice dose of slow-burning friends-to-lovers romance to keep ya going.
This Mortal Coil is just a good time gal and sheās here to entertain.

I really enjoyed the lore and stem aspects of the story and how it was used in the plot! However i didn't have much opinion on the actual plot itself and found it to be quite average? It was still better than average and compelled me to continue reading but didn't strike me as anything especially unique. The romance to didn't mean anything to me. I enjoyed how quickly the "triangle" was dealt with but other than that the relationships bored me.
The "twist" was interesting enough that i want to read the next book and find out how exactly it happened and what implications it holds.
PS so are catarina and jun bei supposed to be different races?? whats up w that?? im also partly interested bc poc characters/leads ... but we'll see how its handled
