I literally have no idea where to start. This book was NOTHING like what I expected and I’m so glad for that. The intricate details of coding and science talk in this novel has literally blown my mind away. I have only ever been so enthralled by one other series (White Rabbit Chronicles), I literally only put this book down once and that was to eat. Words cannot explain how amazing this book was to read.
Quite possibly the best book I've read this year... Not even kidding.
This Mortal Coil is like being on a runaway train. There's no "fat" to this novel. Every little piece of info that is doled out is important and will be revisited. The main characters are people you come to know and love. You root for them to win and overcome the situations they find themselves in. Each is unique and different, but together they weave a fabric that ties them together as a family. Yes, this is an apocalyptic tale, but the story line feels fresh. I haven't seen anything like it yet. The world building seems natural. You understand the players and the game, but the info is provided in a way that doesn't drag the storyline down. If things like the end of the world, advanced tech and gene hacking speculation are up your alley, than this is the title for you. Don't forget that I mentioned this is a runaway train. Be prepared for the twists and turns and a huge revelation at the end. Now I'm left waiting, and I'm invested... I need to know what happens next like I need my next breath!
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This was okay. It moved along well enough, but the plot and characters are not interesting enough for me to continue with the series. The author did a good job with what they set up, but it's just not for me.

Gripping story that made me bite my fingernails for just one more chapter.

Super fast-paced and super fun! So many plot twists to keep me turning the pages each night. A unique twist on the zombie apocalypse/virus plot-line. Had some really interesting characters and themes of self-discovery, ethics, the advancement of technology, and control. This quenched my thirst for a young adult dystopian, as these were the sort of books that made me fall in love with reading in the first place.
Quotes:
"But when you love someone for their mind, you can't expect that their heart will belong to you too."
"Maybe this would be easier if I truly believed that there was something waiting beyond this world. But I don't, and that terrifies me. The world was here before I was born, and it will keep spinning after. The universe is continuous; I am the anomaly. I am the thread that begins and ends, the fale that sputters out. A chance collection of proteins and molecules that perpetuates itself, bound by the electric fire of my mind."

There was so much going on in this book. Dystopian plus sci-fi plus romance. The ideas were all there and I loved the premise, but the writing could've used some tweaking. A lot of repetitive phrases, and a tired, overused love-triangle took away from what would've been a great read without those missteps. I'm somewhat bummed it's part of a series, as so many YA books are now, but I can see where there was too much for just one book. Overall enjoyable for sure, though not my favorite YA book.
