This was a great prequel to The Hate U Give but also a fantastic story in its own right. It was hard-hitting, as all Angie Thomas books are, but there were also some lovely moments of lightness. I really enjoyed learning more about Maverick. And I loved the little nods to On The Come Up and THUG!

Absolutely loved this prequel to The Hate U Give telling Maverick's story. I loved seeing his relationship with Lisa changing and how he changed as he became a dad. I will never get enough of these characters and their story.

I finished this book last night, after starting it when I woke up yesterday morning--which should tell you something about how much I liked it I guess. I've loved every book Angie Thomas has written, and this was no exception. You can definitely read this without having read The Hate U Give, but obviously you should read that anyway, and I do think you get a richer experience reading this one if you've read THUG.
