Wonderful novella. It’s great to see Levana’s backstory. I loved that Meyer made us understand Levana but not truly accept her. Amazing depiction of the effects of severe childhood trauma on how children grow. I really appreciated the subtle references to previous books too.

Fairest (part of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer) tells the story of lunar queen Levana. Honestly, if it had not been part of this series, I would not have wanted to pick up a book centred around such an appalling main character. Levana is severely damaged and grew up to become a madwoman, despite her trying to justify her actions with flawed logic. But anyone who has read any book of the series already knows that. It was nice catching a glimpse of Winter and Jacin’s backstory though, but overall this part doesn’t make it past three out of five stars for me.

It wasn’t a favorite, but a villain origin story is always eye-opening and allows a new perspective. Levana’s history explains so much about how she was raised to think in a certain way and how her malicious actions could be justified. This book precisely and disturbingly opens up Levana’s mind to the reader.

This books was interesting but like 60 million times as dark as the others. Really it was too dark for me. You knew everything that happens was coming which made me able to brace myself a little more but Eve was just so vile and despicable.
