Fairest gives an insight to Levana Blackburn’s miserable life and how she came to be the queen of Luna as we read throughout the books. Marissa Meyer did a great job portraying this villain because there wasn’t any justification for her terrible behavior but merely reason. I really tried to sympathize with her, but she truly is a psycho that only yearned for love and acceptance in the most wicked way she could conjure those feelings up. She’s a manipulator and a power-hungry queen that reflects most world leaders today and their endless greed. Overall, this novella allows the readers to give their own judgement towards an iredeemable, powerful, yet badly scarred woman.

The story of the lunar queen in the Lunar Chronicles is not a happy one. Levana is the indisputable villain of the series, and this short book tells her backstory. There are some aspects where she deserves some sympathy , but for the most part she demonstrates the ruthlessness and lack of concern for others that will be familiar from the rest of the series . This story is as well-written as the author's other books, but unlike the other stories in this series there's no bright spots in this one. Worth reading for fans of the series but probably not a good one to start with, see if you like the happier adventuring first.

The backstory is sometimes hard to read but also well written. Informative and dark, but helpful to know.

it was interesting to see more about levanas background, but this book was very disturbing. while her actions fit her character and the evilness, it’s very reflective of right and wrong and the messiness of politics into a novella. the only reason it’s rated so low for me is that i couldn’t stand listening to levanas monologue and how terrible of a person she was.

Wonderful novella. It’s great to see Levana’s backstory. I loved that Meyer made us understand Levana but not truly accept her. Amazing depiction of the effects of severe childhood trauma on how children grow. I really appreciated the subtle references to previous books too.

Fairest (part of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer) tells the story of lunar queen Levana. Honestly, if it had not been part of this series, I would not have wanted to pick up a book centred around such an appalling main character. Levana is severely damaged and grew up to become a madwoman, despite her trying to justify her actions with flawed logic. But anyone who has read any book of the series already knows that. It was nice catching a glimpse of Winter and Jacin’s backstory though, but overall this part doesn’t make it past three out of five stars for me.
