It was agonizingly uncomfortable being in the head of Queen Levana and her delusions of grandeur.... The tragedy of how the evil queen came to be and the tragedies that followed, I felt were written quite well. I was triggered by certain situations portrayed in the book but otherwise an unforgettable read.

While villain backstories can be good, this was okay at best. Yes it tells the story of Levana and her decisions and development towards evil (cray cray if you ask me) leading up to the events of the Lunar Chronicles. Mostly though, being in Levana's POV was very extremely uncomfortable. All the manipulation and cruel and obsessive thoughts. Interesting addition to the series, but imo you don't miss much by skipping this one.

This was not a pleasant book and the fact that it pained me to rate it 5 stars is a testament to the author’s skill. You aren’t SUPPOSED to like this story. It’s tragic overall with villains that have few redeeming qualities.
