This was written so well that I almost had to DNF it. Reading this is like watching a car crash come to life in slow motion, you know it's awful and will go very very badly but you just can't look away.
The only feeling I have left with is pity...

I thought this book would bring sympathy to Queen Levana, but it didn't really. Though I do understand her motive now. I didn't think I would enjoy this book, but I did. A fascinating backstory in the world we've grown to love so much. The author created a marvelous villain.

It was a different take than I expected, but honestly, I wished for more. Like. It was okay. But just okay.

A little short for my liking, not to mention the illustrations included were falsely advertised. I can't help but somewhat pity Levanna, as I don't believe she was born inherently evil. I think Cinder is lucky she wasn't raised by her real mother, though. Anyway, good thing to zoom through and learn backstory on numerous characters! And that Winter snippet... just enough that I need to have it in my hands ASAP. Until November, Marissa Meyer.

Well, this... explains a lot.
This was a good, enjoyable read and I will never understand why anyone would skip it while reading the Lunar Chronicles.
It's certainly a quite tragic backstory, especially when you realize that Levana would've had so much potential for good were it not for the abuse she suffered at the hands of the people who were supposed to love her.
Of course this doesn't exempt her from all the terrible things she did but it just shows that we are, too often, a product of our own environment.
I still hate her though, sorry Marissa...

An fun villain origin story, but always hard to read a book with a protagonist who is both pitiable and and cruel. Yet you still do kinda get her.

Y'ALL I FINALLY FINISHED THIS SERIES YIPPEE. it was beautiful 😳
omg this was sooo good. like how evil levana is. i thought this was going make the readers pity levana because of her dark past but tbh i didn’t pity her at all. she is just pure evil. like yeah it’s not slay that her sister channery disfigured her. but you don’t have the right to steal someone’s identity just because you’re in love with that person. just disgusting. like when levana forced evret to marry her and basically sexually assault him JUST EW EW EWW POOR BABY DID NOT DESERVE THIS. like he was grieving and he just had a baby but just because some creep with power fell in love with him, HIS LIVE WAS OVER. it was sooo disgusting- the fact levana was so obsessed with evret but yet when she realised she had an opportunity with an alliance with the earth, she quickly had him killed off in an istant. bitch. the audacity to regret it and wear her wedding ring is NASTYYYYY

also channery is fucked as well. the fact she had the seamstress’ legs surgically removed was vile. but tbh the blackburns were all fucked anyway. levana just learned from the best. this was a perfect way to write a villain orgin story without making it all about how sad and horrible their life was that can potentially make the reader pity them. this book defo reminded me of the ballad of songbirds and snakes. like queen levana gives off major coriolanus snow energy.
