I read this because it is a set text where I work, and somehow I never read it while I was in school. The plot was overly complicated in places but brilliantly basic in others. I found it hard to figure out who was descended from who and which generation was which. The main characters were intriguing and almost perfectly rendered but again, I had some difficulty remembering which nickname belonged to which boy and what each looked like. The side story with Katherine, the onion farmer and Trout was cute but tragic. The scenes with the onion farmer towards the end confused me initially because some of the plot is not linear. Generally a good read but I don't think I suffered too much by being deprived of it in childhood.

Never read this growing up so I figured it was time. Very good!! Good pacing, good backstory, and surprisingly deep moments/concepts that were very poignant. But maybe it felt so engaging because the movie does such a great portrayal, and reading the book felt like re-watching the movie (in the best way possible).

I LOVE this book. This is one of the books that I will definitely recommend to anyone of all ages for a lighthearted, thrilling and fun middle-grade adventure.

The story itself is quite realistic and reflects the reality of juvenile camps in the current era, and the main characters are endearing and very likable.
In its entirety, this book is about overcoming adversity and challenges, and how one should never let anything stops them from moving forward. The writing reminds me of [a:Roald Dahl|4273|Roald Dahl|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1311554908p2/4273.jpg], with its childish but quite lyrical prose.
All in all, this book is a fun, but at times heartbreaking read. If you are in a reading slump or you're down in the dumps, pick this up. It will leave you feeling better than ever.
I give this book 5 fat stars.
