This is the Anne book I return to the most. Anne and some of her friends are off to Redmond College, and they learn about more than just the lessons taught in the classroom! Patty's Place feels so homelike and this is the first book with cats.

I cried...

The empathy that the characters have for each other is so heartwarming.

Anne is off to college in this book. She makes new friends, gets into fewer hijinks than in her childhood, but still manages to get herself into trouble here and there. At this point I'm kind of only reading for her romance with Gilbert, who has been her frenemy since day one.
Unfortunately despite the fact he proposes the first time halfway through the book, this turns somewhat into Pride and Prejudice where they both believe the other is courting someone else and the book ends on his accepted proposal.
My quest continues on!

Anne and Gilbert are both Redmond College scholars now. That means new friendships, rivalries and roommates.

The books mature as Anne herself matures. While the charm is still there, we shift more towards emotional growth, life transitions and goodbyes.

The characters and setting are immersive as always, but there’s a general bittersweet vibe between the lines (not mentioning the darker moments of loss and pain).

Despite that, this book is a favourite for most people. I get a strong urge to reread it every fall. Something about the sometimes melancholic feeling fits the change of seasons.

IMPORTANT: I would, and personally always, skip Chapter 16 as it includes graphic animal cruelty!
