Once upon a time, I was really interested in this series for a variety of reasons. I read the first three books right before the movie adaptation with Jim Carrey came out but never looked back at them again. I brought two books with me for my vacation: one I finished yesterday, the other I lent out to my grandma. So I was in a pickle. Should I start a long novel before leaving in a few days and have to carry it home with me (I'm really trying to bypass any unnecessary clutter or collections of books, housewares, etc)?
Upon reflection of my old bookshelf, I decided why not try book #4 of the Lemony Snicket series because I should be able to finish one before I leave. So that is how I came to read a children's (not even young adult, but children's) book over my holidays.
The two stars reflect how much I personally enjoyed the book, being old and all and needing a different kind of read in my adulthood. It does not reflect how much a child may or may not enjoy this book. I can see kids really enjoying this series as some of their first chapter books, although the morbid tone of the book seems a bit weird for a little one.
Anyway, the story follows the three Beaudelaire siblings. They have been sent to live with various people since they were orphaned, but the situation is always bleak and depressing. Now we add in Count Olaf, the greedy guy who is always disguising himself so that he can become the legal guardian and steal the Beaudelaire's fortune.
As you can see, it really is meant for kids. Not sure if I will continue the series this vacation or not - I'm leaning more towards not... But that's not to say that I won't come back to it one day...

The story was fine, the audiobook had the worst sound mixing I’ve ever heard in an audiobook literally ever. I could both burst my eardrums and think I was going deaf at how low the narrator was talking and I hope and pray that the ones after this are better

Thinking back, I would probably have to say that this book is one of my favorites so far. I've been slowly losing hope in this series, especially since there are still 9 left, but this book gave me the little push I need to want to continue on. I still have the same issues that I have in every book, I hate the words being defined but I know I can't escape that. I do wish though that the story wasn't given away at the very beginning. I kind of want to figure stuff out for myself and not have the ending told to me 5 pages in.
All in all I am interested in seeing where the story ends up next.

This book was anxiety inducing. Anxiety usually means a feeling of fear of what's to come it is a response to stress. For instance; if you were to talk to your best friend about something you would most probably be comfortable and not feel anxiety. But if you were to talk about that same thing in front of 100 strangers with absolutely no preparation you might feel your heart beat get faster, get very sweaty and start breathing rapidly and that feeling would be anxiety.
