Both dark and adorable. Normally I don’t enjoy brats in romances, but this guy’s my exception since he’s so devious and lovable. He overcomes a lot of neglect-centered trauma and medical mistreatment, and he rocks lacy underwear while doing so.
I love the relationship dynamic too—it’s basically “evil demonic puppy” and “person who lets the evil demonic puppy off the leash in full support of evil dog doing”. I love ride-or-die partners.
A lot of using sex as a coping mechanism, some D/s dynamics. It’s a very steamy book.

I am kind of angry because the first 40-50% of this, I thought it was going to be a new favourite romance, but it was just Too Long & the plot became incredibly convoluted. While I really enjoyed the dynamic between the main couple, it got very repetitive toward the end, and I feel like I read the same sex scene four separate times over the course of the novel.
I’m actually really pissed i had to DNF because i like this authors plots and characters, but every book she publishes, her fanfic like writing gets worse. And this is coming from someone who reads and enjoys fanfics! But there is only so many paraphraphs i can read where the characters have these sudden and uninspired epiphanies that they then monologue about using contrived and cliche analogies. This is a prime example of my we show don’t tell in writing.
Nobody is going to magically understand the ins and outs of their overcomplicated boyfriends psyche just my taking 10 second to look at them laying on a bed.

Do yourself a favour and read this . Amazing there’s not many book that deserve 10 stars but this one blew me away . Mercer has so many insecurities he goes into full on brat mode to deflect and he’s so funny but Blake sees him from the start which makes Mercer confused . Although Blake sets to use him to gather info on his father it soon turns into something more .
