Just a phenomenal book. I absolutely devoured it over the course of the weekend. McCurdy's voice is so clear in it, it feels like she's directly telling you her story. The content itself is absolutely insane, it's hard to imagine that a person went through it. She did an incredible job relaying her experiences and I hope she feels more at peace now that this is out in the world. Highly recommend this book to genuinely anyone regardless of book preferences.

Affected me way more than I was expecting it to. McCurdy strikes an amazing balance between laying out the harrowing details of her trauma and showing how she spent so long not recognising it as trauma. I’m also very glad her Mom died.

I love Janette McGurdy but she has clearly not processed her trauma—this is giving book 1 Tina Turner, like she kinda wants to stay famous and relevant so she said im gonna make a book about it although the book provides no insight into her life nor her abusers. It’s just facts of her life growing up with an abusive power hungry Mormon mother and her enabling brothers…

Wow, wow, and wow! The audiobook completely blows the written book out of the water. It hits so much harder hearing Jennette McCurdy tell the story herself and what it sounded like to her in that moment.

McCurdy went through so much for two decades when she should have been trying to grow up and understand the person she would become. Not having to placate her mother’s narcissism, and abused by ‘The Creator’ as she puts it. As well as vulnerable to terrible men who know they can use and abuse her to stroke their ego.

I empathize with her, she has struggled with

eating disorders

since she was a child. She has also been made to become something that her mother could live vicariously through and it’s not ok. She was not given help when she was obviously struggling with OCD even when her grandfather recognized it. Also having the weight of supporting a household on her shoulders as a child is mentally exhausting.
