I read this book as part of a book club through the University and I feel like it couldn’t have come at a better time. It was a short but powerful read. I love that Johnnetta challenges the reader to examine their own thoughts and prejudices. And that’s not always comfortable. Understanding and addressing biases we may possess are important so we can be aware of how we treat and interact with others, both consciously and subconsciously. Johnnetta takes it back though, she gives historical context and explains how certain practices came to be. It’s not an easy topic but we need to have these conversations if we’re to progress as a society.

Favorite Line: Imagine if all faculty, staff and students were required to participate in effective unconscious-bias training programs.
