funny lighthearted mysterious fast-paced

Other than a few laugh-out-loud moments, I was overall a little disappointed with this and found it kind of boring.

I didn’t feel connected to the characters or intrigued by this world. I was excited at first, because the opening scene takes place at a Halloween party. Other than that brief mention, there's nothing else to give this an autumnal / spooky season vibe—or any kind of vibe, really. The descriptions are lacking. Lots of dialogue. I wish there was a stronger sense of place and mood.

I can be okay with insta-lust/love in a paranormal romance if that initial attraction is explained by ‘fate’ (i.e. the fated mates trope) and the author follows it up with actual relationship development. However, none of that happens here.

The tentacles felt too non-human for me to find them sexy, so I couldn’t even enjoy this book merely for the smut. I also found it hard to picture the tentacles emerging from Loch's body and the sparse writing style didn’t help to spark my imagination.

I was hoping to be sucked into a new series, but I don’t think I’ll continue with it. Especially since Sloan and Loch remain major characters throughout. (From the blurbs for the later books, It seems like the books alternate between a new couple and returning to Sloan/Loch.) Also, there's mpreg later in the series, and I don't think I'm ready for that. (Edit: I have now read mpreg and am totally cool with it.)

I do recommend this if you’re looking for something lighthearted and humorous with a bit of mystery thrown in (and you don’t mind insta-lust/love). Also, I have to say I love the covers for this series! And the model for this cover in particular is pretty spot-on. (Sloan is supposed to look kind of like Zachary Quinto.)
