An excellent cocktail of dark fantasy and suspense thriller topped off with a bit of romance!

Eugen Bacon manages to weave a tale that transcends the trappings of a modern set story and leans into her talent for writing dream-like fantasy. Descriptions paint fluent pictures that capture epic moments in your mind. Simultaneously, the creative strokes summon colorful personalities with a world of imaginative characters.

Ivory's Story was an enjoyable quick read that tantalized the senses!

The urban fantasy police story is becoming a subgenre all of its own these days - thinking of C.E. Murphy, Ben Aaronovitch, and so on - but this one is set in Sydney, and the heroine must unpack many layers of myth and narrative before finding resolution both for the crime she is investigating and for herself. I found it a bit too dense in places, but enjoyed the ride.

I think I need to return to this one with fresh eyes. The prose and structure are experimental, and I'm out of practice reading experimental work, so I'm not sure if it's that the prose style truly isn't for me, or I'm not educated enough on prose poetry forms to get it.

The context in which the book was written is important, and the storytelling is full of great sensory detail.
