I cannot fault this book. It had me gripped from start to finish and took me by complete surprise with both the plot and the depth it reached. It left me feeling entertained, heartbroken and inspired.

As someone who has been fortunate enough to not have domestic abuse presence in my life, I found this book informative and insightful. It was easy to read and the first book in quite a while I just couldn’t put down. I like that  Lily and Atlas didn’t have an immediate happy ending together although I’m excited to read the sequel!

4.5

“I realized maybe Atlas wasn’t supposed to be my whole life. Maybe he was only supposed to be a part of it. maybe love isn’t something that comes full circle. It just ebbs and flows, in and out, just like the people in our lives.”

“Cycles exist because they are excruciating to break. It takes an astronomical amount of pain and courage to disrupt a familiar pattern. Sometimes it seems easier to just keep running in the same familiar circles, rather than facing the fear of jumping and possibly not landing on your feet.”

I really enjoyed how this book portrays the complication of people. How there is good and bad in everyone. How not every situation is black and white, and sometimes you have to live in the gray. How sometimes when you are in the gray you still have to eventually make a hard best choice for yourself and or someone else you love. How hate is there because the love that preceded it was so strong. This book really embodies those themes excellently.

I gave a 4.5 because there was something about the pacing for me in the beginning of the book that felt a bit slow. I realized this because I WAS able to put this book down a few times. By the time part two came around though I didn’t want to put it down. So I deducted .5

I fell in love with Atlas and Lilys enduring love through time and the strength Lily found at the end.

There are powerful and important messages in this book. I did also find myself falling in love with one of the passages in spoiler>younger Lily’s later diary entries about meaningful relationships that last forever. This book tackles a kaleidoscope of emotions, while creating a multidimensional portrait of
a young woman who becomes a victim of domestic violence
, despite her desire to escape the past and not follow in the same volatile, abusive relationship her mother had been in. But, cycles are not that easy to break. Not when there’s love involved. I just wish the writing had delved into the protagonist’s inner turmoil, her conflicting emotions that make up her nuanced character. I too feel there was plenty of missed opportunity for the writing to lend itself to setting descriptions. I would have loved to read some more descriptions of Lily’s flower shop, or Atlas’s restaurant. At times, I did too feel the writing was repetitive, and might have merited from more time spent editing.

I heard a lot of “bad press” about this book long before reading it about its content, writing style, and the author. With that in mind, I didn’t go in with very high expectations; I didn’t expect to come out the other side liking it, but I think I did. Obviously with the heavy content, it’s a tough read, but I think that is a testament to the writer. You shouldn’t be reading something painful or that emotional and be able to feel comfortable or good about it. With that said, I’m not sure I like the writing style of Hoover; just not my personal preference and maybe if I read more of her stuff (specifically content written recently) that idea may change. I think this book gets more bad press than it deserves and more hype than it deserves, but it was an above average read for me. I had no idea what would happen next because honestly anything could happen, especially with the character’s instability and unpredictability.  It kept me guessing, it kept me engaged, and I’m interested to see the adaptation that just premiered in theaters just yesterday.
