“This was an abduction. Still, I couldn’t help musing over the fact that the police squadron was armed to the teeth to abduct a writer whose only acts of violent resistance were safely between the hard and soft covers of books.”

Generally, I'm not a big fan of memoirs. That said, Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s prison memoir is powerful, and well worth the read. He beautifully captures the duality of the isolation and defiance he feels so that he can survive the terrible experience of being a political prisoner. Thank you for the great book, Net Galley.
