Interesting premise, but the story was way too short to carry it off.

Unfortunately, this was a very forgettable novelette. Milan plunges readers into the middle of the story: Catherine Hooks is the "best governess in England", but her charge is growing too old and will no longer need her. Meanwhile her "beast" of an employer, who also happens to be one of the most powerful men in England, becomes hapless at the idea of her departure, unable to imagine her not being in his life.

The premise is intriguing, but the execution falls short of its potential because of how short it is. There's no time to develop the characters, the plot, or the stakes. It feels very incomplete, and there are many unanswered questions. 1) How long have Catherine and Edward been attracted to each other? Milan is quite clear that they're aware of each other's attraction to them but do nothing. 2) Why did Catherine give that particular fake address to Edward when she left? Was there something significant about it? 3) Who is Catherine? We're told nothing about her except that she's the "best governess in all of England". 4) Are there no obstacles to an aristocrat marrying his ex-governess? Because that's essentially what happens and no one makes a comment about it. 5) Has Edward really changed by the end of the story? He apologizes for being an ass, but beyond that, hasn't made any other lifestyle changes to make him 'worthy' of her love. 6) No scenes with a potentially precocious child? But romance authors love those! In all seriousness, what is the kid's opinion about his old governess becoming his stepmom? Why does he have a governess anyway instead of a tutor, like most aristocratic boys his age?

I could go on and on, but the gist is that it's very rushed and very diluted, and I've already forgotten the lead guy's name! The reason this is two stars instead of one is because I don't outright hate it. I just don't see the point of it, if you know what I mean. Read this if you're bored, but keep your expectations very low.

Incredibly short read. Like 30 minutes.
Catherine is the governess in Mr. Glennon’s house. She’s worked there for years and the two tip toe around their affection for each other. But now his son is going off to school and she must find a new position. When he won’t admit his feelings she says it’s best if they cut contact and gives him a fake address. Of course he tracks her down.
Overall book ⭐️⭐️

Sometimes even Milan disappoints me. I think the length was an issue, and the (asshole) employer/employee aspect wasn't fantastic, either.

it's realllyyy short. the snippets we do get are good, i just don't feel like we have long enough with the characters and their relationship to get into it.
