Wow this book was so f-ed up in so many ways possible. I was actl going to DNF it at 20% because of how messy it was and I didn’t know where it was going at all. I only picked it up again after reading a review that mentioned it was basically a cult. THEN IT GOT INTERESTING AGAIN. I am so glad that I didn’t give up cuz man THAT WAS A RIDE. There were so many twists and turns in the story that I never saw coming. Especially the fact that Lucy’s child was with Phin and not David. I also always kinda expected Libby to run into danger or someone to be out to get her (at one point I also tot the journalist was secretly her sibling or sth LOL)

The child pregnancy was pretty disturbing, amongst other disturbing shit that went on in the house. I’m just really glad that the children got their “happy” endings, and I was so scared that something would just take it all away.

One part of the book I really enjoyed was reading from Henry’s POV. He is clearly a sociopath and saw things from a distorted view. It was quite easy to see where he was coming from and even fall into his self-justification, about how the horrors he had to faced are to be blamed for his behavior. Especially at the part where it was revealed he was only pushed into the river because he tried to get back at phin, but in his mind, he had justified it completely till he had no faults at all (and I believed lol). But there were layers to his character, in that he did feel remorse for his actions as well, and harbored a soft spot for Libby.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and didn’t expect it at all!

this book was probably one of the weirdest books ive ever read. i felt like the ending was very rushed and sometimes the story telling was kind of off.

This was a good book and an easy read. It jumped around to different character POV’s for each chapter, which I don’t always love, but it worked for this story. The book had a Gone Girl feel to it - not necessarily because of the plot, but because of the unreliable narrators. I enjoyed reading this but it’s not a book I’ll think back on or remember six months from now.

Accidentally read the sequel first and was excited to learn the particulars of what happened with the family in the 1980s. Getting more of Libby's perspective was interesting, and Lucy is such an evocative figure too. Henry...his head is an interesting place to be, and even moreso in the sequel. As a person who has been estranged from certain family members at times, the celebration of reunification found here was refreshing. The characters are more pragmatic than maudlin, and it makes for realistic and interesting interactions.
