Wasn’t what I expected but I still liked it. It started slow but got better as the plot thickened.

In almost every question I answers with “It’s complicated” because that’s how i would refer to the whole book and that is what i liked about it.
What I found more intriguing is how complex Henry’s character is and how I couldn’t guess that something was wrong with him until the last chapters , he’s not the classical crazy man of a thriller , at some point I was even  able to justify him. The only thing is that that his obsession with Phin made me really uncomfortable, I found it cute at first cause , u know, He was a kid with his first lil crush, but then at the end… it was so wired and it disturbed me. When I found out the seconde book is mainly about this topic I just knew that I would not  enjoy it. But I think it made a difference in the first book , it was a grate component of the story and I like how it was handled  , what I said it’s a personal perspective , I would have given 5 stars if i wasn’t so sensitive about it.

3.5/5

Slow start, interesting end. Need to sit on my thoughts for a bit.

Oh this book is going to give me nightmares, but in the kind of way that it was so interesting and I was so pulled into it that it was hard to come out of the horrors that befell the characters.

Libby has inherited a house on her twenty-fifth birthday since she is the sole survivor of a cult suicide pact that occurred when she was ten months old. Returning to the house in which three people died in and she was born in, Libby sets off on figuring out what happened and who she really is in relation to her family. Accompanied by a reporter who attempted to uncover the mystery as well, Libby finds that it was more than a cult that filled the home that is now hers. As Libby begins her journey, another timeline from the perspective of Henry Lamb, the son of the previous owners of the house and Libby's presumable parents. From Henry's perspective, the story of what happened beginning in the late 1980's through the early 1990's unfolds. Soon Libby finds and Henry divulges the horrors that occurred as a musician and her boyfriend, along with the Thompsen family, move in upstairs in the grand home of the Lamb's. All these characters living in a home together, one that begins to shut away from the world and over devotion toward David Thompsen, the seemingly perfect father who turns to adultery, abuse, and cult like manifestations. Libby's perspective is informative, an innocent looking for the truth and finding something horrible, yet still able to make the most of it all. Henry's perspective, however, is one of darkness, manipulation, and obsession. It is a wonder if Henry was already inclined toward such evil behavior or if he was a product of the abuses he suffered in his own home. It was Henry that was the true frightening thing in this novel. One could put aside all of the cult like happenstances and find a cheerful light at the end of the tunnel concerning Libby and her sense of completion. But Henry, that is a different story for his is not complete and that is a little terrifying. Again though, was he made to be the way he was or was he always like that? This is one of those eye opening novels that offers a perspective that is not the norm and takes a look inside the darkness of people who are desperate and depraved.

Messed up things happen all the time all around and as this novel shows, it could be happening right next door without anyone knowing. That is what makes a true horror story, one of suspense and nightmares, for that all of this could be true and people really are as they have been depicted in these pages.

So weird and dark, but no real plot twist and misleading to call it a thriller.
