A simple story but exceedingly effective. The fast pace and evocative writing style make this very hard to put down. This is the first Dazai book I’ve ever read, but I will have to get more after this. His ability to draw out empathy from the reader for characters who are extremely pathetic is beautiful. A reminder of what it means to be human, to lose direction and find it again. This title is something special.

the writing of the narrator was done so well it has shaken me to my core. beautifully tragic and so well written. she is neither a perfect nor and imperfect villager she is simply herself. this excerpt of her life is so fascinating to read especially as a young woman myself..every young girl must read this, if for no other reason than to gain a new perspective on the human experience through the point of view of a woman on the verge of entering a new chapter of womanhood itself. the narrator was at times so dreadful and other times…painfully relatable. i loved reading every minute of this story!
