Brilliant story with a small cast of characters living in London. Though the reason for different formatting of dialogue in different sections eludes me.
Zadie Smith isn't my favourite author and the thread of her books is somehow too loose for me to really get into the story and be captivated. But I've never read London described this well, this intricately, and that only is so fascinating.
I wanted to like this novel more than I did. It fell flat in the middle and seemed unresolved at the end. There were some beautiful descriptions and robust characters, but overall, it lacked a strong narrative arc.

I hated the first fifty pages. And then I started to like it, but still felt like I was reading a screenplay instead of a novel. If the numbered section (the last section) had been a book in itself, I would give it 4.5-5 stars.
