Perfect pairing of prose and illustrations. Put this book next to the definition of “delightful” and as an example of “probably deeper than you think at first.” (It’s also quite funny.)

A short and sweet tale about a polite dragon, that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Well narrated by Anton Lesser.

Found and read on Gutenberg Reader. Old style delight, the kind of story I would have read as a young girl. I'm so glad I found this, what a lovely throwback. <3

This has to be one of my favorite children’s books of all time and we read it again and again. Although, I think “children’s book” isn’t a fair label, as it’s as enjoyable for an adult as a child. (I admit to sometimes reading it whether my kids are listening or not.) Per CS Lewis that is the mark of good children’s literature, and The Reluctant Dragon does not miss that at all. The Audible version by Kenneth Grahame has to be my favorite though, as his reading and character’s accents and inflections simply add to an already delightful tale. I know much of this sails over my children’s heads, but that’s what makes it a wonderful book. There is more to catch and laugh over upon each return. A truly splendid story.

If imagining little dragonlets playing Saints and Dragons at their mothers feet doesn’t make you smile then I don’t know what will. Read it. :)
