I love it when an author can take some risks and challenge the reader's disbelief while staying in control. For the majority of the book, she does, and it's brilliant! I think the last 40 pages needed a little more cook time.

It feels silly to write, but I wanted this to be queerer. There was so much great stuff here, but why stick to a majority of cis man + cis woman sex? In such a wild ride of a book, the hetero sex felt exceptionally boring.

This is a really special book. I can’t begin to wrap my head around how anyone could write it. It fluidly moves between magical realism and historic fiction and carves out a unique space for itself. The characters are full and stay with you.

The word that comes to mind is “body” when I try to sum it up? It strings together this theme of physical bodies, bodies of work, a nation’s “body”, bodies of water, etc…. Whether or not that makes sense, read this book! It’s an exploration of freedom in the context of American history and future.

This book, so heavily influenced and about water, is water itself. It’s fluid, defying any rigid shape, flows in the direction it needs to. It’s a one of a kind, odd, beautiful book.

A captivating tapestry of a tale with a number on captivating and interesting characters. Now, there was quite a few sex scenes (but not what you'd expect) so I don't know that I'd have my teens read it quite yet, but it was really quite good.
