DNF somewhere in the first few chapters. This story is unnecessarily bloated.

first off, this book would be a delightful movie. it would translate so well to the screen - make the story really come alive.

nearly always in a love triangle, i am 100% on the side of one love interest — but not here, which is very rare, and shows how well the dynamics were written. i loved both camille and alistair. their love story gave us beautiful lines like this: “lark, the entire world, and all the good it has to offer, will be limitless, and yours.” same goes for the “then” and “now” split timelines, both of which i enjoyed equally.

unfortunately, i think the author needed to make it clearer much, much sooner that the “hallucinations” first lark, then all three of them, experienced, was actually them slipping into the chthonic realm. some things also got a bit repetitive, like the use of the phrase “he is a selkie kept too long ashore” and more generally, physical descriptions of the sea, the sky, the fields, the sunsets. all of that could have been trimmed down to not tire out the reader so much. there was also too much purple prose for my comfort.

ultimately, however, i did really enjoy this story and thought it was very original - great gothic vibes. BEAUTIFUL cover!

thank u to netgalley and the publisher for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

Tenderly, I Am Devoured by Lyndall Clipstone feels like drowning in a gothic fairytale. It's haunting, poetic, and soaked in salt, blood, and longing.

It’s about a girl raised in a crumbling seaside cult, tied to dark gods and even darker secrets. The writing is lush and lyrical, like reading a fever dream. It’s slow and strange in all the best ways.

This book doesn’t shy away from bodily horror or the rawness of emotion, but it also doesn’t wallow in it. Instead, it becomes a story about metamorphosis: how we break and find beauty in the wreckage. And the romance? Twisted, tender, and completely unhinged in the most deliciously monstrous way. It's not your typical love story, but one steeped in power dynamics, longing, and acceptance of one’s true form.

This is not a fast-paced fantasy. But if you love dark feminine energy, gothic romance, or stories where the monster isn’t something to fear but to become you’ll be devoured.

⚡️Thank you Books Forward PR and Lyndall Clipstone for sharing this book with me!

Slow at times and I wasn’t really into it until about 200 pages in. Wasn’t a fan of how Lark was always crying. I mean like tears every other page. She’s an emotional girl.  Was hoping the Cthonic world would be more of a focus but it focused on Lark’s home instead. The word “ribbon” -noun and verb- was noticeably repetitive. On a positive note I did enjoy the relationship with Camille and Alastair- how it evolved throughout the book and how they supported each other.

Thank you to Netgalley, Lyndall Clipstone and MacMillan for an ARC of Tenderly, I Am Devoured. As one of my most anticipated releases of the year, Clipstone absolutely did not disappoint! The gothic overtones in this book made me feel uneasily cozy; this book reads like the smell of the ocean, smoke, liquor and a dash of strawberry all at once. I loved the big three; Lark, Camille and Alastair all have their own draw and make the story feel larger than life. I loved learning about Verse and the rest of the somehow dreary yet vibrant world Tenderly, I Am Devoured takes place in. As a big fan of gothic literature, this book will now and forever have a very special place in my heart! Excited to get my hands on a physical copy very soon.
