The writing is this is as beautiful as the cover! I was transported to a gothic seaside! This was just what my autumn heart needed this summer! The balance between salty sea air and dark gothic horror was done so well. The atmosphere, mystery, writing and characters really made this book for me. I would say the only thing I didn’t love was the romance. I don’t think love triangle are my favorite.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc!

I wanted to like this. I really really did. Sadly, it’s too wishy-washy for me and feels like a prolonged fever dream.

I finished this book and was a little underwhelmed. The cover and the synopsis promised so much, that in my opinion, the book failed to deliver on.
I think the effort to make the vibes gothic and atmospheric left the book feeling directionless and vague. The writing was beautiful but ultimately said nothing. It made the book drag despite how short is actually was. I wanted higher stakes and a more pointed plot to be invested it. The story meandered and so did my interest.
At the heart of it, I struggled to care for our characters and their romance. I wanted more time for it all to develop and for their to be more tension. The transition from childhood crushes to strangers to lovers was way to fast (Also siblings! I had trouble getting past that point). I truly didn’t understand the point of Lark’s flashbacks and just found the deviation from the main storyline to be distracting.
I think there was promise, and I did keep reading because I liked the premise and wanted there to be more and for it to get better.

We got flashbacks that only served to take me out of the story I was interested in. Characters felt a bit underdeveloped, and I wish we’d spent more time with the god (if you’re thinking of reading this for the god: please, dear god, don’t..he’s barely there).

He pulls on his overcoat unhurriedly
Sleekly, he crosses the threshold
His eyes gray as the storm washed sea, flash with a poisonous light
His mouth tilts into a cool grin
He dips his head in a mocking deferential bow
