Meg Cabot

I ate this book over the course of twelve hours. It was funny, down to earth, cute, corky, everything you should really expect in a Meg Cabot novel. It's an moderately enjoyable read.

Maybe it's because the last Meg Cabot novel I read was two years ago, and my perspective and my reading taste has changed, but this one didn't really "wow" me like the last one.

So this book is basically about an unlucky girl from Iowa named Jean who moves to New York because well...that's the big mystery isn't it? Within the first few chapters, you meet the antagonist, Tory, who basically runs this entire novel alongside, Zach, the adorable yet slightly predictable love interest. Tory likes Zach and Zach and Jean are "just friends." This makes Tory jealous and conspires to get revenge using the power of "magic." That's basically your plot-line...meh.

But here's my real problem. If you're going to make a book about witches and magic...actually make it about witches and magic! The "witchcraft" and "magic" in this book was scarce. It came down to mostly useless voodoo and blood rituals, plus a string of convenient coincidences that could "only be explained" as magic. It was such a let down in terms of being a "supernatural" novel, which was what I really was expecting.

So it's pretty good for a casual read if you're into Meg Cabot, just don't be fooled by the sinister sounding summary on the inside.

Didn't really like some of the parts. Waste of time but unique story.

A fun quick read. While I found Jinx's constant anxiety and fear and general obliviousness at times a bit much, it's a fun YA book to speed through.

Very fun, cute YA witchy book.

I used this as a palate cleanser between other more intense books, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The characters aren't particularly dynamic, but the story moves along very quickly with a satisfying ending. As you might expect with YA.

Fun little witchy book to read during spooky season.

Super cute YA book. I’m not usually a YA reader but enjoyed this one.
